Heart of Our Country (Uluru) – By Aboriginal Artist Kelly Taylor.
Heart of Our Country is a powerful and heartfelt collaboration between two talented Aboriginal artists of the same bloodline, Kelly Taylor and her nephew Beaver Lennon. Together, they bring to life the spiritual heart of Australia, Uluru (Ayers Rock), in this extraordinary multi-panel statement piece.
Inspired by memories of travelling through Country with her grandmother, Millie Taylor (née Lennon), Kelly began this painting in 2017. Her visions came to her in dreams, images of journeys through Alice Springs and the APY Lands. To capture these memories, she painted the sky first: yellow for the sun, orange for the desert heat, and red for the sand. Layers of brown and black represent the shifting terrain and the distant silhouette of land at sunset.
Kelly then painted Uluru itself, surrounded by eucalyptus trees, kangaroos, eagles, bushes, rocks, and a sacred waterhole. To deepen the connection, she invited Beaver to add his unique touch, clouds, magpies, kangaroos, and the Ernabella Waterhole (bottom right), a special place often spoken of by Millie in her book Born Out Bush.
Once Beaver completed adding his part, Kelly finished the piece with final touches, layering the bushland and landscape with care and reverence. The result is a striking, story-rich celebration of ancestral knowledge, memory, and Country.
